What is "SWim like a dolphin"?
"Swim like a dolphin" is a community project that started after the success of the Dolphin Swim event in the Mekong River at the end of May this year. The project aims to help children in Kampot and Kratie learn how to swim. To do this, public and hotel swimming pools are being opened up for lessons, where trained swim instructors teach kids important swimming skills. The goal is to make sure more children are safe and confident in the water, while also having fun.
why are swimming skills important?
Many children in Cambodia grow up near the ocean, rivers and lakes but never learn how to swim, putting their safety at risk. The Swim like a dolphin project was created to change that. By offering swimming lessons in Kampot and Kratie, this program gives kids the chance to learn lifesaving skills in a fun and safe environment. With the help of trained instructors and access to local pools, children not only gain confidence in the water—they also gain protection against drowning, which is one of the leading causes of child death in the region.
Parents are encouraged to sign up their children and give them the tools they need to stay safe, enjoy the water, and build a stronger future.
What are the next steps?
The first steps in establishing this new program in Kampot and Kratie are to train local Khmer swimming instructors and to find suitable pools for conducting the lessons.
