What is the documentary about?

 

This new documentary follows Khmer Ocean Life and the fishers they work with as they test “banana pingers”, acoustic deterrent devices (ADDs) that emit high-frequency sounds to warn marine mammals away from gillnets. From early mornings on the water to long, hot days pulling in nets, the film shines a light on the everyday lives of fishers who are becoming citizen scientists to help protect and conserve the ocean they call home.

In the villages along Cambodia’s coast, the sea’s oldest witnesses are becoming its newest protectors. Following Khmer Ocean Life's community-grounded work, the film tells the stories of a fisherman who can no longer fish, a mother who learned to read only in recent years, and the wider network they belong to, showing what community-led conservation looks like in practice.

“Khmer Ocean Guardian” is produced by Cheryl, who also produced the earlier documentary series “Beyond the Noise”. Together with Sidney Ken, an award-winning documentary director and cinematographer, she aims to highlight community-led conservation and explore how a rapidly changing environment affects us all, especially those whose lives depend on the ocean.​​
